My First Triple Couponing Trip

Today is the kick off of Harris Teeter's Triple Coupon Event. They have one about every quarter. This one lasts a week (ends Tuesday). I haven't gone in the past because the closest Harris Teeter is in Brentwood...about 30 minutes away. Plus, I was intimidated by the idea that there would be too many professional couponers and that I would get squashed in a minute by an overzealous deal finder. Sure, my close circle of friends jokingly refer to me as a Coupon Queen, but I know there are far bigger fish in the sea than me.

So today, I sucked it up and went with my friend Amy. She'd done this once before, and we thought it would be a bonding experience shopping with her two year old, and my one and three year old. Ha ha ha! (Not)

Harris Teeter has very strict guidelines regarding tripling:
-Harris Teeter triples coupons with a $.99 face value and below (translation: $.75 coupons are worth $2.25 off)
-Only 20 coupons maximum will be tripled. Anything more than 20 will scan at face value.
-Only 3 identicle coupons can be used. Anything after the 3rd one will scan at face value.
-Only 2 identicle IPs (Internet Printables) can be used. Anything after the 2nd will scan at face value.
-Only one visit per person (household) per day. Boo! I think they track it by your shopping (store) card.

After seeing their policy, I figured that there would surely be enough inventory for everyone. After all, you can only buy 3 of each item. We were deeply saddened to find that, on Day 1 of triples, almost everything we went in there for was wiped out. They get shipments every other day, so we were invited to show up tomorrow at 7am for another trip. No thank you. That, and the prices are sky high anyway.

Here's what I ended up with though...not terrible for 'back up' ideas (only had a few other $.75 off coupons in my binder today.):

-[4] Gerber 2nd Food (jars), 4 oz. = $.35 total (had to buy 4 to use the 1 coupon)
-[3] Gerber Fruit Puffs = $1.46/ea (didn't realize they were this much, otherwise, I would have passed)
-[3] Kleenex Viva Paper Towels, Big Roll = $.69/ea
-[2] Swanson Chunk Chicken = $1.06/ea
-[1] R.W. Knudsen Organic Juice, Papaya Nectar = $.25 (clearanced to $2.49 and had a $.75/1 coupon)
-[1] Skintimate Shave Gel, full size = $.24
-[2] Degree Ultra Clear Deodorant, trial size = FREE
-[2] Sesame Street Bubble Bath = $1.29
-[1] Roman Meal Bread = $1.14
-[2] Eggo Bake Shop = $.74/ea
-[12] Dannon Yogurts = $.10/ea

Total paid = $18.04 ($2.00 was tax). Saved $48.60.

Honestly, I've done better at Publix and Kroger with their doubles and good sales. There were a few items I got that I truly needed (deodorant, shave gel, bread, paper towels), so it wasn't a wasted trip entirely. Just not worth the trouble of traveling so far with kids. It was fun hanging out with Amy for a bit though.
